Stoneware vs ceramic

Stoneware vs ceramic

When I told some of my family and friends I was designing mugs to be released in Autumn, they said "but don't you already offer mugs?" I said "Yep! I do. But these mugs are going to be so much better!" Naturally, they then asked "Really? How?"

I know some of you guys have been wondering the same thing too so in this blog post I'm going to break it all down for you...

Until you've tested both china mugs and stoneware mugs, you don't know how different they are and how significantly they can impact your drinking experience. Stoneware mugs, though less common than ceramic mugs, offer several distinct advantages that make them worth considering.

Firstly, stoneware mugs are renowned for their durability. They're made from clay fired at high temperatures meaning they are less porous than other ceramics. This means they're a lot more resistant to chipping and cracking, making them a great choice for everyday use. The robust nature of stoneware also ensures that it maintains its shape and finish over time, even with frequent handling. Especially if you have children who want to grab things all the time or you're just clumsy like me!

Secondly, stoneware mugs are great for heat retention. Their dense structure helps them retain heat longer than many ceramic mugs. This means your coffee or tea stays warm for a more extended period, allowing you to actually enjoy your drink without constant reheating. This is particularly valuable for those who enjoy their drinks slowly or get distracted by daily tasks (again, like me!).

Thirdly, stoneware tends to have a unique, rustic aesthetic that I personally absolutely love! Each piece often features a varied, organic texture and colour variations that are a result of the stoneware’s natural properties. This goes so well in the country cottage style kitchen I'm trying to create but really adds so much charm and individuality to any kitchen collection.

Finally, and most importantly to me, stoneware mugs are suitable for vegans. Unlike products such as bone china, stoneware does not contain any animal-derived components or chemicals that could be harmful. So if you are a vegan or you are mindful of your health and ecological footprint, stoneware mugs are a practical and ethical option for your daily drinks.

Additionally, stoneware mugs are generally more resistant to staining and odors. The non-reactive surface doesn’t absorb flavors or scents, ensuring that each drink tastes as intended, free from lingering residues of previous beverages.

So whether you need something strong, something that will keep your drinks warmer for longer, a gorgeous rustic look & feel, something animal friendly or a bit of everything, you can't go wrong with stoneware mugs.
